What is Sunshine and Smiles?
In 1998, Area IV had the opportunity to begin a program called “Sunshine & Smiles”, an intergenerational play group located at George Davis Manor (now Cumberland Pointe), a Lafayette nursing home. The group, facilitated by a volunteer, allows parents and their typically pre-school age children and nursing home residents to connect and interact. In late 2004, the second “Sunshine & Smiles” play group was created at Rosewalk Village in Lafayette. The new group was organized with a Lafayette Moms' Club and focuses on individuals living in the Alzheimer’s unit. Due to the success of the program, a third “Sunshine & Smiles” group expanded to Home Hospital in 2005. When that facility closed, the group moved to Regency Place (now Kindred) in south Lafayette.
The group meets once a month and benefits all involved. As one resident at Rosewalk Village said, “This is the best day I’ve ever had.” These visits are especially meaningful to those residents whose family members are not able to visit very often. Children who don’t live near their grandparents or great-grandparents also benefit by getting to spend time with an older generation.
