Energy Assistance Program

The Energy Assistance Program provides financial assistance to low-income households to maintain utility services during the winter heating season. The household may obtain assistance one time from November to mid-May with the Winter Assistance Program. See the Summer Cool Program description for additional services available.

Is this Program for Me?

The mission of the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is to assist low income households in meeting their immediate home energy needs. The Program serves individuals and families of all ages if they meet the following requirements and provide the appropriate information requested.

Winter Assistance Program

November 1st, 2011 through May 15th, 2012

Program Details:

  • One-time assistance to families and individuals with the cost of their heat and electric bills.
  • Additional funds (crisis) may be available if services are disconnected, in danger of disconnection, or if the applicant needs bulk fuel at the time of application.
  • An Energy Assistance Program recipient is protected from having their regulated utility disconnected between December 1 and March 15.

Information Needed:

  • Applicant must provide the following information:
    • Name, birth dates, and Social Security cards for all household members
    • Income for all household members age 18 or older, for the past 12 months
    • Copy of lease or proof of home ownership
    • If applicable, legal divorce or separation papers
    • Current heat and electric utility bills
    • Additional information may be required on a case by case basis
    • More information on required documents

Summer Cool Program

(June through August)

Program Details:

  • May qualify for a one-time $100 credit on your electric account.
  • May qualify for an air conditioner if you or someone in your household:
    • Is age 60 or older or
    • Is disabled or
    • Is a child under the age of 6
    • AND you have a doctor’s note stating that a household member has a medical need for an air conditioner and that the lack of an air conditioner would seriously jeopardize that person’s health
    • AND you have not received an air conditioner in the past 5 years.
    • Any EAP eligible household may qualify for up to 2 box fans, dependent on family size.
